My first post for 2012! Yay!

Guys, do you still remember my post about Jogakbo? Of course you do! It was second to my last entry for 2012. Not so long ago right?!This post is actually related to that.

Last January 19, Thursday, KCC had given me the opportunity to attend their special class to learn how to make a Korean miniature fortune pouch to celebrate Seollal, The Korean New Year! The fortune pouch is a very commonly used motif in traditional Korean craft items, representing representing wealth, abundance, and fortune. The class started at 6pm but I arrived at 6:30 and everyone is almost on their half-way of the procedure but thanks to Hayan for helping me out.

Today, im gonna share to you how to make a Korean miniature fortune pouch. Sorry for the not so alluring photos. I just used my camera’s phone which is not so awesome for photos. haha

What you need:

1. Korean cloth

2. pins , needle and thread

3. Pattern

4. Pair of scissors

The Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines launched the “Jogakbo” exhibit last November 4 at the exhibition area.

“Jogakbo generally refers to the Korean traditional patchwork and is an expression of the Korean women’s sense of beauty and creativity. Having been passed down from generations for six centuries, this craft has been used mainly to create various household items and are usually sourced from leftover clothes.”

Bojagi, literally means a cloth of wrapping is the most quintessential boudoir craft. It is commonly employed in everyday household objects as well as to keep objects safe.

Jogakbo, the most characteristic style of Bojagi, consists of small pieces of cloth and is formed with a wide range of fabrics with geometrical patchwork designs. By mixing and matching small pieces of square or rectangular cloth, Korean women have created Jogakbo for daily purposes as wedding gifts and household decorations. Jogakbo is one of the artworks that illustrate the distinctive feature of Korean traditional needlework.

These boudoir craft varies on the shapes (speckled design, or oblique lines), linings (single or double-layered), color (natural dye, embroidered), type (silk, hemp, ramie, cotton) and function (daily usage, special occasions).

Currently on display at the KCC Exhibition Area are works recreated by talented artists and members of the Ssamzisarang Korean Boudoir Craft Research Center. It is an internet-based community of Korean women deeply committed in recapturing the uniqueness of the Korean traditional craft.

Korean Cultural Center of the Philippines Director Hwang, Seong Un said: “The woman of yesterday tirelessly worked on the Jogakbo, sourcing their materials from leftover fabric scraps when resources were scarce. They were able to produce sophisticated works of art and enabled the women to express their aesthetic desires and femininity as manifested in the symmetry and the harmony of colors.”

Boudoir crafts in Korea express the Korean women’s sense of beauty and creativity. For six hundred years, this craft has been used to create various household items that evoke beauty and color. Boudoir crafts include patchworks, natural dyes, embroidery, traditional knots and wide range of accessories such as pouches, pillow case and pin cushions, among others.

This exhibit is open for public and will run from November 04, 201- February 29, 2012. Visit Korean Cultural Center in the Philippines at 2F Mancor Corporate Building, 32nd St. Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

–

As I was shooting the Jogakbo Exhibit, there were Korean media who suddenly interviewed me and asked what and why I like about Korea. Then i learned that It’ll be air on Japan TV on January 2012.

Every time i hear these songs playing on the radio, i can’t keep my feet from stomping and my hips from swaying.

Known for her song “Trouble is A Friend”, “The Show”, and from her new album Two “Heart Skips a beat”, Australian singer and songwriter, Lenka had her first live concert last Sunday night, October 09 at the World Trade Center Hall D as the last country on her Asian Tour, which i watched with my sister Abby.

We’re in front row! yay <3

The show was started with the performances of 3 front acts namely Taken By Cars, Tricia Garcia and Barbie Almalbis and her band, who never fails the crowd with the power of her music.

Barbie Almalbis

After 20 minutes of waiting for the sound check, Lenka finally set on-stage opening her show with “Heart Skips a Beat” while playing on her little piano, that makes everyone screamingly-sing along with her.And as Lenka said, I’m trying hard not to resist the joy when she finally came out.

On her aqua blue garb, Lenka totally gave a great performance last Sunday singing her tracks from her self-titled album and Two album. She was so cute and lovely to watch dancing even if she’s pregnant.

It was so funny when they sang their last song even they hadn’t played yet the song “The Show”. When they said goodbye, they immediately precede to the back stage and it was totally lights off. Then the crowd was screaming for “more… more… more…” and “Lenka! Lenka! Lenka!”. After a few seconds, the band was already on the stage. And Lenka said that she’s really expecting that we will ask for more!We definitely enjoyed her performance closing the program singing with of course “The Show”. lol I thought im gonna go home without seeing her performing this.

This wasn’t the first time that Lenka and her band performs in the country since they had done several mall tours last December 2009 for her debut album. Lenka also shares that Filipinos are so obsessed with Christmas since she’d seen a lot of decors based from her previous visit.

After the show, meet and greet happened at the backstage and i was one the the lucky lenka’s music lovers who had a chance to see her. The organizers are very strict that they didn’t allowed dslr to take for photos during the show and even take a photo with her during the meet and greet. In addition to that, she can only sign one item for your 5 seconds chance of seeing her!

Despite that, I am still so lucky to have a 5 second conversation with my favorite musician. After watching her show, she liven me up to share the loveliness of life through music. To create music.

Since April of this year when Marié Digby arrived the country, I’ve been bugging Fran on twitter if she can guest Marié on RX Concert Series. Fran was so nice to reply that they might do it soon. Now that Marié already releases her third mainstream album (Your Love) and with all her radio tours to promote it, Monster Radio RX 93.1 finally feature her on RX Concert Series which will happen later at 7pm. isn’t that perfect that my favorite YouTube artist performing on my favorite radio station hosted by my favorite DJ?

I also asked Marié e if she could play Beauty in Walking away (one of my favorites) later in the show. Unfortuantely she cannot play it since that’s a piano song and she’s restricted to guitar at radio because the studio is usually small.

Five years ago during a camp, my dear friend introduced me to a song called REVERIE. It was my first time to hear the song and I fell in love with the artist then because of the lyrics and the diversity of the rhythm. It was like; the words are so perfect on what I feel towards the condition I’ve been dealing on that time. I won’t deny that I am an emo-ish back then hahaha So I asked what was the name of the band. And she says, ”The Morning Of”. And I ask over, “The Morning Of? Interesting… so when we went back home I instantaneously googled the artist and their song.

The Morning Of is a pop/indie/rock band originating from Newburgh,New York. Influenced by Death Cab for Cutie and Dashboard Confessional, the band is formed of 6 members namely Chris Petrosino – Piano/Guitar/Vocals, Rob McCurdy – Guitar/Vocals, Justin Wiley – Vocals/Guitar, Jessica Leplon – Vocals, Dan Celikoyar – Drums/Percussion, and Ryan Jernigan – Bass. The band’s first EP in 2007, Welcome Change. Goodbye Gravity, held a steady spot in the Top 50 best selling albums on Smartpunk.com for six months. They also hold a steady spot on PureVolume’s Top 100, and top 10 in their pop genre. REVERIE was under the band’s first Full Length Album, The World As We Know It in 2008 which was debuted on the U.S. Billboard heatseekers chart at #18and peaked at the #25 pop album on iTunes. Last May 11, 2010, the band released their latest album entitled “The Way I Fell In” with producer Jim Wirt (No Doubt, Jacks Mannequin, Incubus, Hoobstank, The Rocket Summer) which was debuted #10 on the U.S. Billboard heatseekers chart.

The Morning Of is a really good performer that create great music. Im crossing my fingers crossed that soon, the band will perform in my country. Check out their music here.

Too much pressure can cause you stress. And frequently when we are stress, we become impulsive with our words and actions creating so much smash ups with the people around us and specially with our selves. But how do we handle it? One time, i received an email from our part-time instructor about the “STRESS-PREVENTION FORMULA” and i wanted to share it.

Dear All,

When I am faced with a seemingly developing problem, my “stress-prevention formula” is to ask myself: “Is it worth the time and effort?” Frequently, the answer is “No.” So I forget all about it. Or if I text or e-mail someone and he/she doesn’t reply, I ask myself: “Is it worth waiting for – the reply?” Frequently, the answer is: “It doesn’t really matter.” Or if something is unattended to, I ask myself: “Is it really important to do it at this time?” Frequently, the answer is: “It doesn’t really matter.” And I leave it at that. Sometimes, I have disagreements with people. I ask myself: “Is it important?” Frequently, the answer is “No; it is not important.”

Then, having the answers, I move on. Later, it will turn out that the answers are correct. Give it a moment, an hour, a day, a week. Months. Years. The answers are correct! The secret is not to do anything immediately, but wait for a while. Events are self-correcting. That’s a Universal Law

I have noticed, after all these years, that people come ang go into/from my life; events come and are gone. They don’t stay! So, it doesn’t really matter. Nothing is permanent. I call this: “energy minimization” . It is also an illusion. A show. A drama of sorts. I found that if one refuses to enter into a scene, then the scene vanishes.

Stress? How do you spell it?

Stress

A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience,
raised a glass of water and asked, ‘How heavy is this glass of water?’

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g.

The lecturer replied, ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter.
It depends on how long you try to hold it.
If I hold it for a minute, it’s not a problem..
If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm.
If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance.
In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.’

He continued,
‘And that’s the way it is with stress management.
If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,
the burden will become increasingly heavy:
and we won’t be able to carry on. ‘

‘As with the glass of water,
you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again..
When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.
So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down: don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burdens you’re carrying now,
let them down for a moment if you can.’

Cheers,

Anna

—

On the lighter note, I am so grateful that there are people who dropped by this on this site. I can’t believe that we’re just beginning the 3rd quarter of the 2011 yet criticalpinaymaxims.wordpress.com already doubled the 2010 total views! look:

Heaven knows that I don’t like drinking tea since im such a coffee aficionada since before. I even got addicted to it by consuming less than 5 tumblers of coffee in a day when I was in college (that was because im still into production and I just NEED it). Thus coffee shop is more familiar to me and we have lots of them; Starbuck, Seattles’ Best Cofee, UCC Café, Figaro, Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, Gloria Jeans, Bo’s Cofee etc.

But lately, I’ve been reading so much about this new craze of drink on twitter- Happy Lemon. When I first heard of it, I was like Happy Lemon? What’s that? Then I googled it and found results of tea- It’s a Tea shop. Originally from Hong Kong, Happy Lemon was brought to the country last November 2010 by a group of Chinese-Filipino businessmen who have been friends since grade school and college: Kelvin Gaisano, Kristine Gaisano, Smart Gilas player/TV host Chris Tiu, Andy See, Wesley Pardilla, and Edward Go. It is a drink shop which offers a wide variety of tea (lemon series, fresh tea, milk tea, specialty tea, mousse spin) and coffee drinks. Though im not a tea lover, I really wanted to try this even before since Marié
Digby’s talking about her favorite Happy Lemon drink endlessly on her twitter which is the Milk Tea with Black Pearl Sago. But since it’s only located at Promonade in Grennhills San Juan my Happy Lemon’s first experience definitely took very long. If there’s a place that I really don’t want to go it is in Greenhills. I really hate travelling there. I even declined a job in a Hotel situated in that place because I always feel exhausted travelling there.

When I was in Eastwood last month, I passed by this another Tea shop-Serenitea. I ordered Milk Tea with Black Pearl Sago for me to compare it with Happy Lemon. And at my first sip, I blurted out, “ay tea!” And myself answered, “that’s why sereniTEA” hahaha

Anyway, this is it! Finally! I just had my first Happy Lemon experience on my favorite day yesterday at Eastwood! Yez! They opened their second branch at Eastwood Mall on the top floor and again beside Starbucks. After my flu vaccination, Im very excited heading to the Happy Lemon. Of course I ordered Milk Tea with Black Pear Sago. Here’s my review:

I still have more flavors to try and i’ll be Happy Everyday

The Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival is a film festival in the Philippines held annually in the month of July at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP). Its aim is the development and promotion of Filipino independent film.

This year thirty one digital films in competition, plus more than a hundred in exhibition, new sections, and a second festival venue all make Cinemalaya bigger and better this year. With the tagline in festival ads beckoning audiences to “See the Unseen”, Cinemalaya films this year tackle such themes as passion, memory, truth, despair, obsession, terror and splendor.

Cinemalaya will reach a wider audience as it will be held in two places at the same time: its main venue at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, CCP Complex and at Greenbelt 3 in Makati City, in cooperation with Ayala Theaters Management. The addition of Greenbelt 3 as a second major venue for the festival is part of the vision of Cinemalaya organizers to make the Festival more accessible to the growing number of audiences that attend Cinemalaya.

Now on its seventh year, Cinemalaya is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Film Development Council of the Philippines and Econolink Investments, Inc. It is an all-digital film festival that aims to discover, encourage and honor cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity.

Synopsis:The long-standing conflict between the military forces and the rebel group Abu Sayaff has severely ravaged the poor town of Patikul in Sulu. Residents have become so accustomed to the armed clashes, that reports of kidnappings and recruitment of young Tausugs to join the rebel groups already became normal news to them. However, Amman, a 33 year old coffee farmer in Sitio Kan-Ague, continues to believe that there is still hope for their town. Amman believes that educating his children would change their present situation. His 9-year old son Fahad is one of Kan-Ague Elementary School’s top students. Fahad’s brilliance and perseverance have led him to represent his school in the annual regional quiz bee. Joined by his best friend Alelie, Fahad goes through rigorous training under Michael Balmes, the principal of Kan-Ague Elementary School. Michael is one of the few volunteer teachers who walk daily through a dangerous path just to get to Kan-Ague. Michael’s constant encouragement and persistence to educate the kids in Kan-Ague gives new promise to the residents of Kan-Ague. However, this hope becomes short-lived after a relative of one of the volunteer teachers dies in an armed encounter between the army and rebels. Little did the residents know that this incident would lead to the death of their beloved principal and, for fear for their own safety, force the teachers to abandon the students of Kan-Ague. The town’s worsening situation compels Amman to take action and convince his co-parents to find a solution, but Amman soon discovers that this won’t be an easy task. Most of the parents are reluctant to cooperate, and he finds no support from the local government. Amman is now faced with two choices: capitulate to the brutality of war or find a way to make the teachers go back to the classrooms of Kan-Ague to teach their children once again.

For their last task of the day, they visit the dumpsite for the first time. As filmmakers gunning for authenticity, they get excited with the ”beauty” of the squalor around them. Soon enough, they are faced with reality as they come face to face with the real effects of their chosen subject. Babae sa Septic Tank is a comedy about misguided ambitions, the art of making art and the romanticization of poverty.

Synopsis:The once illustrious Lopez-Aranda family has faded. Celia, once the darling of Philippine opera, and Gaspar, a distinguished ex-congressman, lacked the shrewdness to maintain their once elegant status. Saddled with a failed marriage, a vanishing career and mounting debt, Celia sold her share of their house to Gaspar, now bedridden. She managed to stay for free in exchange for being Gaspar’s caregiver. Gaspar loves listening to Celia’s arias. This idyllic arrangement is shattered when he slips into a coma. His daughter, Raquel, comes home from the US, determined to sell the house to salvage her own economic woes abroad. This signals Celia’s impending homelessness. With only a few heirlooms to sell, she is at her wits’ end. A fervent believer of the Sto. Nino, she hopes for a miracle. She dresses up her grandson, Antony, in Sto. Nino robes to prepare him for the coming fiesta. She insists this will invoke a miracle that will awaken Gaspar and stop Raquel from selling the house. Antony’s father, Mombic, while processing his travel papers to work in Dubai, tries to strike a deal with Raquel in selling the property without his mother Celia’s knowledge. Merced, Mombic’s sister, reluctantly takes on the burden of taking care of Celia and a household sliding to ruin. The family members clash in a confrontation that reveals their weaknesses and their hopeless ideals. Mombic leaves his son to the care of his mother and sister, Merced, the only family member who quietly accepts her fate. As a final ditch to awaken Gaspar, Celia holds a tertulia, inviting her aging opera singer friends. They sing arias, oblivious to the ravages of time, crippled reminders of a glorious past. In the middle of a chorus, Gaspar quietly dies, sealing the fate of his sister and the mansion that once was called Villa Los Reyes Magos. Celia looks out into her once beautiful garden. She sees Antony, still in his Sto. Nino robe, playing in the garden, offering a little illusion of hope to a past that can never be rekindled.

Synopsis:Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa explores the intersection and divergence between feminist and gay concerns in the third world context, as it features the poetry of Merlinda Bobis, Ruth Elynia Mabanglo, Joi Barrios, Rebecca Anonuevo, Benilda Santos and Ophelia Dimalanta. When Marlon, a college student, stalks Karen, his literature professor, he finds out that she moonlights as a choreographer and dance teacher in a dance studio. Frustrated over his performance in her literature class, he plans to impress her instead by learning to poeticize his body movements and enroll in her dance class. He hires his classmate to teach him the basics of dancing. As Dennis, his tutor, teaches him how his body should move, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance. This opens up his world to new insights about the life of Karen as s single woman who chose to live the life of an artist in a third world setting. Marlon begins to understand how the poems being discussed by Karen in class are testaments to her choice to stand by her art. Karen eventually finds out, through Dennis, that Marlon only enrolled in her class to be near her. She confronts Marlon about this and wishes that his interest for dance would survive his infatuation for her. Marlon feels betrayed over Dennis telling Karen. But it is also this sense of betrayal that tells him that he has already become close to Dennis, whom he now considers a friend. Up until then, Marlon and Dennis have become inseparable as they both tackled the complexities of poetry and dance. Sensing the coldness between the two, Karen set them up to help her train a group of dancers for a cotillion dance. Eventually, Karen trains both Marlon and Dennis to star in her dance adaptation of the epic Humadapnon, when she bags a grant. Marlon will play the lead role of Humadapnon, who becomes trapped in a cave full of women. Dennis’ character now has to rescue Marlon from the women, as he plays the role of Sunmasakay, the male incarnation of the goddess Nagmalitong Yawa. On the eve of their performance, in a drunken conversation, Marlon confronts Karen how he could not understand her poetry. Karen, in response, assures Marlon that he does understand her poetry. His mind is just unwilling to, unlike his body which already understands. Karen invites Marlon to dance with her, but in the middle of her dance, she passes him onto Dennis. Their drunken dance culminates with Marlon and Dennis taking on the roles of Humadapnon and Sunmasakay on stage.
